Abstract
Sleep disorders are among the most common health problems worldwide and significantly affect physical health, cognitive function, emotional well-being, and quality of life. Although pharmacological therapies are effective, their long-term use is often associated with adverse effects such as dependence and cognitive impairment. Aromatherapy has emerged as a promising complementary therapy that utilizes essential oils to promote relaxation, reduce anxiety, and improve sleep quality. This review summarizes the prevalence and classification of sleep disorders, the principles and history of aromatherapy, mechanisms of action of essential oils, commonly used oils for sleep enhancement, pharmacological properties, and clinical applications. Current evidence suggests that essential oils such as lavender, chamomile, bergamot, sandalwood, and vetiver may improve sleep through modulation of the olfactory-limbic pathway, neurotransmitter activity, and autonomic nervous system regulation. Although existing studies demonstrate encouraging results, further high-quality clinical trials are required to establish standardized treatment protocols and confirm long-term efficacy and safety.
