Yukti-Based Pharmaceutics in Ayurveda: A Critical Analysis of Samyoga, Vishlesha, Kala and Samskara

Abstract
Background: Ayurveda is a comprehensive system of medicine founded upon rational principles that integrate theoretical knowledge with practical application. Among these principles, Yukti (rational planning and intelligent application) occupies a central position in the formulation, preparation, and administration of medicines. Unlike empirical or arbitrary approaches, Yukti-based pharmaceutics employs systematic reasoning by considering multiple variables such as Samyoga (combination), Vishlesha or Vishesh (specificity, differentiation, or separation), Kala (time), and Samskara (pharmaceutical processing). These principles collectively determine the quality, efficacy, safety, stability, and therapeutic outcome of Ayurvedic formulations. Objective: To critically analyse the role of Yukti in Ayurvedic pharmaceutics with special emphasis on the principles of Samyoga, Vishlesha, Kala, and Samskara, and to correlate these classical concepts with contemporary pharmaceutical sciences. Materials and Methods: A narrative review was conducted using classical Ayurvedic texts including Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, Ashtanga Hridaya, Sharngadhara Samhita, and Rasatarangini, along with published scientific literature on Ayurvedic pharmaceutics and pharmaceutical technology. Results: Samyoga influences synergistic pharmacological activity and formulation compatibility. Vishlesha ensures individualized drug selection based on specific attributes of substances and patient characteristics. Kala governs seasonal, circadian, disease-stage, and pharmaceutical timing, directly influencing therapeutic success. Samskara transforms the physicochemical properties of drugs, improving potency, bioavailability, safety, and shelf life. Collectively, these principles demonstrate remarkable similarities with modern concepts such as pharmaceutical processing, formulation science, pharmacokinetics, quality assurance, and personalized medicine. Conclusion: Yukti-based pharmaceutics represents a scientific framework that remains relevant to modern pharmaceutical research. Integrating classical principles with evidence-based methodologies may contribute significantly to standardization, drug development, and global acceptance of Ayurveda.
